Speakers at the seminar “Transparent and Responsible Consumer Finance – A Foundation for Sustainable Development”

Amid recovering consumer credit, shifting customer behavior, and rising expectations for borrower protection, the workshop provided a forum for dialogue on improving the quality of credit growth and strengthening market trust to support the sector’s development.
Representing FiinGroup, Mr. Le Xuan Dong, CFA, Managing Director of Market Research & Advisory, delivered a presentation on the role of formal consumer finance in sustainable development. Drawing on market data, the keynote address outlined key market shifts and changes in borrower behavior, helping finance companies identify and capture growth headroom more effectively.

Key highlights from Mr. Dong's presentation:

Mr. Le Xuan Dong, CFA, Managing Director of Market Research & Advisory at FiinGroup, delivered his presentation at the event.

  • Consumer credit has returned to a growth trajectory, while the market share of finance companies (FinCos) is narrowing amid intensifying competition from commercial banks and alternative lending models.
  • Although FinCos’ asset quality is improving, they continue to devote significant resources to debt collection, operating cost optimization, and risk management. Market trust remains a barrier,as some consumers still conflate licensed FinCos with unlicensed lenders.
  • Rather than borrowing only out of urgent need, consumers are increasingly using small-ticket consumer loans as a tool for fast payments and spending management. This trend is most pronounced among younger customers, particularly Gen Z, who expect digital services that are convenient, transparent, and embedded in their daily activities. This requires FinCos to innovate across products, distribution channels, and customer engagement.

  • Consumer lending is shifting from standalone, mid-to-large-ticket loans originated at the point of sale (POS) toward financing small-ticket, high-velocity purchases and payments on digital platforms. Through B2B2C and embedded finance models, FinCos can offer credit to customers at the point of need – when they purchase goods and services or pay for everyday expenses – quickly and seamlessly.

  • The gap in access to formal consumer credit points to substantial untapped market potential. To capture this opportunity, FinCos need to sharpen their competitiveness by understanding shifting customer behavior, and by designing and integrating lending products into partners’ digital platforms to reach customers at the moment a payment need arises. Alternative data on customer transactions and behavior plays a critical role in credit assessment and scoring, as well as in monitoring credit quality throughout the loan lifecycle.

Mr. Le Xuan Dong joined fellow speakers in the panel discussion.

To turn opportunities into sustainable growth, finance companies need to accurately understand evolving customer needs, identify the right distribution channels, design lending products tailored to new channels (especially digital platforms), and collect and leverage integrated data – including alternative data – to manage risk effectively throughout the customer lending journey. In-depth analysis of the market and borrower behavior will help businesses define their product development direction, optimize customer acquisition, and build sustainable, responsible growth strategies.
