As portfolios’ asset classes and strategies are become increasingly diverse, can a uniform set of investment limits still accurately reflect the risk profile of each fund type?

Speaking at a panel discussion at Vietnam Fund Awards 2026, Mr. Nguyen Nghia Tuan, Deputy CEO of SSIAM, supported a risk-based approach, under which regulation is tailored to the investment objectives, asset characteristics and risk level of each fund type.

  • Not all portfolios carry the same level of risk: Equity funds, bond funds and products with different investment strategies should be assessed based on their own asset characteristics and investment objectives.
  • Investor protection remains a core requirement: Panelists noted that investment limits should still apply to products offered to the general public, and fund management companies must strictly adhere to their disclosed investment strategies and risk levels.

At the portfolio level, this approach requires fund managers to clearly understand concentration levels, asset value volatility and the financial health of issuers.

This is also where FiinGroup supports fund management companies through its ecosystem of market data, investment analytics, reference pricing and credit assessment, providing a stronger basis for risk monitoring, portfolio evaluation and decision-making.
