[Recap] Skills Gap In The AI Era: Insights From FiinGroup At The 2025 National Economics University’s Conference

Last week, a conference themed “Integrating Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Entrepreneurship, and Start-up Mindset into Academic Programs” was held at the National Economics University (NEU). This event served as a key bridge between universities and businesses, taking an important step toward developing high-quality talents capable of leveraging AI and creating true values from data in the new AI era. 

At the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Tho, Director of NEU, emphasized that digital transformation and AI are reshaping how people learn and work. He highlighted that redesigning academic programs that integrate practical skills, creative thinking, and AI applications is the key to developing high-quality human resources in the new era. 

Mr. Nguyen Huu Hieu, CEO of FiinGroup, shared from a corporate perspective, pointing out a significant skills gap among students, causing 6 big misalignments between workforce capabilities and actual labor market requirements: 

• Knowing the tools but lacking application-oriented thinking 

• Limited access to real datasets and sandbox environments for experimentation 

• Knowing AI but not fully understanding AI 

• Expecting to be trained, while businesses need talent who can deliver value immediately 

• Lack of opportunities to engage in real business processes 

• Using AI while not being able to develop AI/Agent 

According to Mr. Hieu, developing a workforce capable of creating true value from data, leveraging AI for decision-making, and driving innovation will expand Vietnam’s AI–Data opportunities, and accelerate digital transformation, and therefore strengthening national competitiveness. 

Based on these observations, Mr. Hieu proposed 3 key solutions: 

• Hands-on Training: Learning must be tied to real data and practical exercises.  

• University-Business Collaboration: Creating opportunities for students to learn, work, and apply knowledge in real-world scenarios. 

• Fostering Creativity and AI Thinking: Developing analytical and decision-making skills based on data and apply AI to practical situations.
